The soccer star was born Joseph William Namath on May 31, 1943, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where he was also raised. Of Hungarian descent, he was raised Catholic by his parents, Rose and János Andrew Namath, with whom he was close until their divorce, after which he remained with his mother and older siblings, three boys and an adopted sister.

Namath went to Beaver Falls High School where he was very good with sports. He played baseball as a fielder and basketball as a guard. He would be remembered for his diving skills during his high school days playing basketball. The sport he enjoyed the most was football, which he played as a quarterback.

By the time he graduated from high school, many Major League Baseball deals were already gearing up to secure his signing. But then what he wanted more than anything was to play football and what his mother wanted was for him to go to university. Joe Namath chose to go to the University of Alabama where he showed what he was made of in the football sense. He helped the Alabama Crimson Tide win the national championship in 1964.

In 1965, he entered for the NFL and AFL Draft, and was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets, respectively. He decided to leave with the Jets who were willing to pay him a record salary of US$427,000 at the time.

The same year he was named the AFL Rookie of the Year and in 1966 and 1967 he was the AFL’s passing leader. In 1968 and 1969 he was the AFL Most Valuable Player. Shortly before the AFL and NFL merged, he helped the Jets win Super Bowl III, where he also became the most valuable player.

Joe Namath played for the Jets until he joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1977, the same year he retired. In 1985, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was honored with the Ride of Fame in 2012. The New York Jets also retired his No. 12 jersey.

Acting career

Broadway Joe began his acting career after hosting The Joe Namath Show for a brief period in 1969. His success with the show allowed him to easily appear on stage and play a few roles in movies and television shows.
